MANILA, Philippines — With hands raised in prayer and voices echoing devotion, thousands of devotees gathered at the Minor Basilica of San Sebastian on Thursday to witness the traditional “Dungawowl game,” a solemn moment featuring the images of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel de San Sebastian and Jesus Nazareno.

The andas, or carriage, carrying the ebony statue of Jesus Nazareno arrived at the basilica around 5:45 p.m., greeted by cheers and shouts of “Viva Nazareno” from the crowd.

Meanwhile, the image of Nuestra Señora del Carmen de San Sebastian appeared from the church’s red and yellow balcony, creating a symbolic scene of reverence and unity.

IT & Business Process Association of the Philippines, Inc. (IBPAP) chief operating officer Celeste Ilagan said they are “very concerned” about Revenue Memorandum Circular (RMC) 5-2024, which the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) released in January, as it mandates a 25 percent withholding tax and 12 percent value-added tax (VAT) on business entities providing cross-border services.

In a statement, the company said the project dubbed RASLAG-4 has a capacity of 36.646 megawatt peak (MWp), which is its biggest facility yet. It is also set to produce 53 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity, which can power around 24,000 homes per year.

The San Sebastian Basilica Foundation clarified that, contrary to popular belief, the Dungaw is not a reenactment of Mary and Jesus’s biblical meeting on the way to Calvary.

Rather, it symbolizes a gesture of respect and religious courtesy between the King and Queen of Quiapo.
